Gala 2009 – A Magical Affair: An Evening of Illusions and Revelry
The Dave Nee Foundation's Fourth Annual Fundraiser – A Magical Affair: An Evening of Illusions and Revelry – was an incredible success which generated over $100,000 to raise awareness of depression, eliminate the stigma associated with mental health issues, and prevent suicide. The gala was held on Friday, November 13th at the elegant Edison Ballroom in Midtown Manhattan. The Foundation was proud to award our inaugural 2009 Ray of Light Award to Dana and Hart Perry. The Perrys received the award in recognition of their groundbreaking documentary ‘Boy Interrupted,’ about their son Evan's death by suicide at age 15. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to the Perry Family for their enthusiastic participation and thoughtful remarks at the event. Congratulations were also in order for Lizzie Dix Brenkus (a Princeton classmate of Dave Nee's) for winning our 2009 Raffle Grand Prize: A Brand New Sony Bravia 46″ Flat Screen HDTV.
Guests enjoyed the close-up magic of the Artifice Group and designer cocktails along with stations of delectable sushi, sliders and ceviche prepared by the venue's gourmet chef. It truly was a night of enjoyable illusions and grand revelry and we hope to see you all again at our next gala!
Boy Interrupted is a film that raises questions. It asks how a young boy can end his life at the tender age of 15. It struggles to find answers about what kind of family he had and the life he led. By its very nature, it is a naked display of its filmmaker's personal life at its most revealing and perhaps disturbing. How can a mother, we may ask, make a film about the death of her son? The Dave Nee Foundation was proud to honor the filmmakers of this groundbreaking documentary with our 2009 Ray of Light Award. For more information about Boy Interrupted, please click here.
Magic and Entertainment for “A Magical Affair” provided by The Artifice Group
Dave Nee Foundation guests enjoyed a special opportunity to mix and mingle with Matthew Holtzclaw and Prakash Puru of the Artifice Group and their colleague Asi Wind during our 2009 event. These magicians are well-known the world over for their amazing slight-of-hand, incredible mentalism and mind reading, and ingenious magical illusions. Everyone got a thrill watching these guys perform up close and personal!
